Establishment: Kokrajhar College is a premier educational institution located at the heart of the town which is the head quarter of Kokrajhar District and the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) of Assam. It was established in the year 1959 with arts stream only. The science stream was opened in the year 1964 and was brought under deficit system in 1972.The college was taken over as a full fledged Govt. College on 22nd August 2006 and  rechristened in the name and style of Kokrajhar Govt. College.

Mission: The establishment of Kokrajhar College was made with honest and noble missions. It was set up with the untiring effort of some missionaries of the locality. The mission underlying the foundation of Kokrajhar College have best been reflected in the improvement of the socio economic, cultural and civic life of the people of this area in the subsequent phases of time since the establishment of the college.

         The time of establishment of Kokrajhar College, the number of Colleges in the lower Assam was limited only to three; they were B.N. College, Dhubri, Abhayapuri College, Abhayapuri and Goalpara College, Goalpara. So Kokrajhar College covered a large catchment area which is predominantly inhabited by socio economically backward tribal people. Illiteracy was the primary feature of this locality at that time. One of the missions of Kokrajhar College was to provide people with opportunity of higher education so that they could shoulder the responsibility of educating their people on large scale. 

          Like any other backward places of India, the society of this area had suffered from a variety of social evils, such as superstitions, crude social practices, prejudices etc. Economic system was based on social inequality and exploitation and was of primitive nature. People suffered from poverty, misery, unemployment, diseases. The primary reason for such socio economic backwardness was ignorance and illiteracy of the people. 

          Removal of socio economic backwardness through education was also a mission of Kokrajhar College. 

          Modern education is rational and based on scientific outlook. The mission of this college was to promote scientific, rational and secular outlook among the people and to help people overcome superstition and evil social practices and to inculcate a rational behavior. 

          Progression to higher studies was another mission of this college. After completion of College education, successful students would have the opportunity to attain higher education at University and technical institutions etc. 

          Another mission of Kokrajhar College was to help the people to get employment, Acquisition of higher education is oriented towards better employment opportunity. Establishment of Kokrajhar College was also equipped with this noble mission. Another reason of backwardness of that time was the lack of civic sense among the people. Promotion of civic sense or bringing about civil society can be made only through modern education which was also another mission of Kokrajhar College. 

           Since the time immemorial, this region had remained isolated from the main land physically and socio-culturally. The area was hardly accessible to people due to specific geographical location. Establishment of the college was envisaged as a centre of disseminating enlightenment. In order to pull down the barrier of sociocultural isolation, a centre of intellectual interaction was necessary. People thought the college would play the role of creating unity and integraty among the people. This was another mission of Kokrajhar College. 

Vision: 

1. Quality education : The necessity of quality has increasingly become important in this era of competition and specialization. Kokrajhar College has now thought that it is its bounden duty to improve the quality of the institution in every aspect in order to produce competent and successful students. The college has decided to lay special emphasis on the following points in relation to quality improvement : 

            i.   Effective organization and management, 

            ii.  Appointment of competent and eligible teachers with good academic career,

            iii.  Entrance test for the students 

            iv.  Regular supervision of the classes. 

            v.  Assessment of students' performance and remedial measures, 

            vi.  Teachers self appraisal for remedial measures, 

            vii.  Students supportive measures etc. 

2. Helping in the promotion of self sustaining development of the society :  

Development of a society can be realised only through effective and strategic development planning. Effective and strategic development planning can be possible only through proper understanding of the society and its problems. In order to find out the root cause of a social problem and apply remedy to this, we have to adopt scientific approach which can yield best result. 

         The college has a vision to execute research projects in both science and arts faculties, which are relevant and beneficial to the interest of the society. 

     Kokrajhar area is rich in natural resources and full of flora and founa. The faculty of science has ample scope for carrying out both minor and major research projects on nature and environment in this region with an objective of protecting the environment which is rich in bio-diversity. Establishment of sustainable relationship between man and nature, promotion of agro-based industries, increasing forest products, study on herbal medicine, etc. can be made. 

       Mini research projects can also be carried out by the faculties of social science in various socioeconomic, political and educational problems of the region. The execution of this mini projects will transform this college into a centre of intyellectual excellency promoting educational and regional development. The college will try to devote its resources for the maximum benefit of students and the society. The college has introduced Career Counselling Cell, Extension Education Centre, Grievance Readressal Cell and Quality Assurance Cell, NCC and NSS and Scout and Guide are already there. Through all these units, the college will take the leadership of society in all aspects of life i.e. social, economic, cultural and Civic life and encourage the society to cope with the changing values and ideas of the world in all respect. The same will also encourage the learner to be self reliant rather than reliance on other.
 

Affiliating University and Council: 
       The college is affiliated to Guwahati University for degree level and to the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council for Higher Secondary level.
